Integrating the Case Method into Local History Education: An Effort to Foster Critical Thinking and Contextual Awareness Among Students

This study examines the integration of the case method in local history education as an innovative pedagogical approach to enhance students’ critical thinking and contextual understanding. Grounded in qualitative research design, the study employs a literature-based analysis to synthesize theoretical and empirical findings related to case-based learning and local history instruction. The findings reveal that the case method provides a structured framework for engaging students in analytical inquiry, enabling them to evaluate historical evidence, interpret multiple perspectives, and construct reasoned arguments. When combined with local history, this approach becomes more meaningful as it connects historical content to students’ cultural and social environments. The study also identifies key factors influencing successful implementation, including teacher competence, instructional design, and institutional support. Furthermore, the integration fosters not only cognitive development but also cultural awareness and civic responsibility by encouraging reflective engagement with local historical issues. Despite challenges such as limited resources and varying levels of teacher readiness, the approach demonstrates strong potential to transform traditional history learning into a more interactive and student-centered process. This study contributes to the discourse on innovative history pedagogy by offering a conceptual framework that bridges analytical rigor and contextual relevance. Future research is recommended to explore empirical applications and measure its long-term impact on student learning outcomes.
